Abdominoplasty—typically called a tummy tuck—removes excess skin often left after pregnancy or significant weight loss. In some cases, patients also need abdominal muscles repaired and targeted liposuction to remove pockets of fat. Dr. McNemar was the first plastic surgeon in the area to offer this advanced technique for certain patients. Surgeons insert drains after tummy tuck surgery to remove fluid that can build up just below the skin (a condition called a seroma). Drains can be uncomfortable, and patients need to monitor and empty them once or twice daily for about a week after surgery. Instead of drains, Dr. McNemar closes the space where the fluid can accumulate using a special suturing technique. This can lead to a faster, more comfortable recovery.
