Breast Implant Type

The two major types of implants in use today are saline and silicone. Dr. McNemar fills saline implants with a sterile salt water solution during your breast augmentation. Filling the implants during surgery allows him to create smaller incisions, evaluate the results, and change as needed. After the procedure, due to the salt water solution, the body will naturally absorb the implant's contents should a rupture occur.

Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive gel prior to surgery. Many women feel that silicone implants possess a much more natural feel. Dr. McNemar recommends routine follow-ups to check the implant status if you decide to have silicone implants.

Breast Implant Shape

After determining what type of implant you would like, it's time to decide on the shape. The two primary implant shapes are:

Breast Implant Size & Profile

There are a number of factors that go into choosing the "right" size, from your body type to your aesthetic goals. Dr. McNemar will discuss the different factors involved and, together, you will achieve a decision. If you have significant sagging, he may suggest combining your augmentation with a breast lift in the Bay Area.

Dr. McNemar also will discuss the profile of your breast implant. The three primary types of breast implant profiles are high, medium, and low. The profile (or "projection") is determined by your body type and chest dimensions. Low profile implants are wider and flatter, while more projected, narrower implants are high profile. Although most women choose high or medium profile implants, Dr. McNemar will make sure that you understand which profile is right for your body's dimensions and your cosmetic goals.

Implant Incision & Placement Options

One of the keys to any successful breast augmentation in the Bay Area is minimal scarring following recovery. Dr. McNemar takes extra precautions to minimize visible scarring by locating the incision in an area such as under the breast crease (inframammary incision), under the armpit (transaxillary incision), or around the areola (periareolar incision).

Dr. McNemar also will help you understand the options for the implant location. After incisions are made, he creates a breast pocket for the implant. The two most common locations for placing the breast implant are behind (submuscular placement) or in front of (submammary/subglandular placement) the pectoral muscle.
