Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction helps improve women’s lives in a variety of ways. Many choose it to correct one or more of the following concerns:

  • Breasts that are too large in proportion to their body frame
  • Pendulous breasts with nipples that point downward
  • A significant size difference between breasts
  • Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by breast weight
  • Skin irritation beneath the breasts
  • Limitations in physical activity or clothing choices
  • Self-consciousness about breast size

Breast reduction can be performed at any age, but waiting until breast development is complete is usually recommended. Pregnancy and breastfeeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts. Nevertheless, many women decide to undergo breast reduction before having children and feel that they can address any subsequent changes later. If you plan to breastfeed in the future, you should discuss this with Dr. McNemar.

How Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Most women elect to have their breast reduction performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. During the surgery, breast volume is reduced through removal of excess fat and tissue through varying incision patterns that may include a keyhole pattern, vertical pattern, or circular pattern. The size of an enlarged areola (pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) may also be reduced. Dr. McNemar may use liposuction to remove excess fat from the body to further enhance results.
