How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?

Dr. McNemar typically performs breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. Once you are fully anesthetized, he makes incisions according to the surgical plans you developed during your pre-op process. Through these incisions, he carefully places your implants, constantly assessing them for symmetry and sizing. Once he's satisfied with their positions, he closes your incisions with absorbable sutures and surgical tape. The tape is removed at a later follow-up appointment, typically about 1 week after surgery. The entire surgery usually takes about 90 minutes. You will be able to return home with a trusted loved one after a brief period of observation.

Dr. McNemar provides an overview of the breast augmentation procedure during your consultation and thoroughly explains the choices you'll have, including the specific implants you want, the incision locations, and whether the implants will be placed in front of or behind the chest muscle. Read on to learn more about those choices. For additional information, visit Dr. McNemar's Breast Augmentation FAQ page.

There are 3 options for the location of incisions:

Implant Placement

Breast Implant Placement

Before inserting the implants, Dr. McNemar creates a small pocket where the implant is placed. That pocket can be behind the chest muscle (submuscular placement) or in front of the muscle and behind the existing breast tissue (subglandular placement). Dr. McNemar explains the advantages of each position and recommends what he thinks is best for your procedure.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation Recovery?

After your procedure, you will need to take care to rest and follow Dr. McNemar's post-op instructions carefully. Although your restrictions may vary depending on the specifics of your surgery, all patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting and upper-body exercise for several weeks. Discomfort is quite manageable with prescribed medications, and most patients find that they can easily transition to over-the-counter pain medicine after just a few days.

In general, patients can return to lighter activities, including work, within 1 to 2 weeks of surgery. Swelling subsides gradually over the first month. During this time, the breasts soften and settle into their new positions, a process informally called "dropping." The ultimate results of your surgery can take several months to develop.

Over the course of about a year, your incisions flatten and fade significantly, resulting in very discreet marks that are generally very well hidden within the contours of your breasts. Once your recuperation is complete, you can enjoy your shapelier, sexier breast appearance for many years.
