What Procedures Can Be Combined With a Facelift?

It’s common for people to think that a facelift rejuvenates the entire face, but that’s a misconception because a facelift focuses on the bottom two-thirds of the face. I often recommend combining procedures to produce more comprehensive results.

Combining facial rejuvenation procedures is similar to the cliché about embarking on home improvement projects. Upgrading the kitchen tends to make the living room look worse, so you might want to renovate the living room as well. But then there’s the dining room. Ultimately in both cases, it often makes more sense to tackle everything at the same time.

So what procedures can be combined with a facelift? Here are some insights I share with patients at my Tracy practice near San Ramon, CA.

Benefits of Combining Procedures

There are several advantages to combining facial contouring procedures in a single operation. These include:

Comprehensive results: A facelift often meets the cosmetic goals of patients concerned about sagging cheeks, jowls, or lack of definition along the jawline. But signs of aging around the eyes and forehead will remain unless addressed with other procedures.

Minimize the need for anesthesia: Even though the risks of undergoing cosmetic surgery are very low, it’s a good idea to limit the number of times you need to have a general anesthetic. By combining procedures, you only have to undergo anesthesia once.

Plan for only one recovery: Having to take time off from work or other activities for facelift recovery is something you must plan for, and many people find it difficult to fit multiple recoveries into their schedules.

When you combine procedures, you only need to plan for one recovery, and it’s important to note that combining procedures doesn’t require a longer recovery time. So you’ll be back to working and exercising in a similar amount of time as if you just had a facelift.

Cost-effective: Certain plastic surgery fees will be charged whether you have one or multiple procedures. For example, every plastic surgery incurs an operating room fee and an anesthesia fee.

With combined procedures, you only have to pay these fees once, and even though a combined surgery will take longer than if you were only getting a facelift, the surgery will still be less costly than if you were to have multiple, separate surgeries.

What Procedures Can I Combine With My Facelift?

Men and women who combine a facelift with procedures such as eyelid surgery or a brow lift will see more dramatic results that will also look more natural. Even nonsurgical treatments such as laser skin resurfacing or injectable fillers can create more attractive outcomes. We talk more about combining surgical and nonsurgical facial procedures in our related post.

While you can include many different procedures with your facelift, the right options ultimately come down to your goals. During your consultation, I carefully examine your face and goals to recommend whether you will benefit from a combined approach. I will then customize a surgical plan based on your specific needs.
