A Natural Look Is the Key to Good Facelift Surgery (Updated 2024)

Want to regain a more youthful look? Men and women today are more interested than ever in subtle results that appear natural, says plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas McNemar. Serving Tracy, Livermore, and Pleasanton, Dr. McNemar notes this trend toward more natural-looking results has also caused a surge in nonsurgical treatments.

“As a surgeon who specializes in facial rejuvenation procedures,” Dr. McNemar says, “I’ve always used advanced techniques, both surgical and nonsurgical, that are designed to improve a patient’s appearance without looking as if they’ve been worked on.”

The Nonsurgical Facial Enhancement Trend for Natural-Looking Results

Statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) in 2024 show the popularity of nonsurgical facial enhancement procedures continues to climb across generations, from those in their 20s to those in their late 60s. Dr. McNemar says that’s a good indication people are more interested in natural-looking results.

He has also seen increased requests for a “liquid facelift.” He offers this combination of minimally invasive procedures, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal filler injections, to provide an overall rejuvenated appearance without the downtime associated with surgical procedures.

Facelift Surgery for a Refreshed Look

Dr. McNemar says surgery is still the best option for some patients. However, even those who choose that route want a refreshed but natural look.

“Older facelift surgery techniques sometimes left patients with a ‘windblown,’ overstretched look,” Dr. McNemar says. “No one wants that. Today, when I do a facelift, I lift the deeper tissue and muscle layers instead of just pulling skin tight. That technique restores drooping tissues to where they used to be and looks much more natural.”

“It’s important to remember,” he says, “that even though nonsurgical procedures are extremely effective, they still offer temporary results and don’t match the aesthetic changes that are possible with plastic surgery.”

Facial Plastic Surgery Soars in Our Region

The ASPS report we referenced earlier in this post also found that 35% of all facelift surgeries in the U.S. were performed in the West, including the Central Valley and East Bay Area. Our Pacific region also accounts for:

  • 29% of all eyelid lifts
  • 33% of all cheek implant procedures
  • 41% of all chin implants
  • 43% of all facial fat transfers

Many of these procedures, such as eyelid surgery, facelift surgery, and facial fat transfer, lend themselves to natural-looking results that help men and women look revitalized rather than unnaturally “done.”

“People have more choices than ever when it comes to facial rejuvenation,” Dr. McNemar says. “Combining facial plastic surgery and nonsurgical treatments is often the best path to achieve someone’s aesthetic goals. Treating more severe concerns with surgery and using injectables to smooth away wrinkles in another area is usually a great choice for results that look natural and balanced.”
